I currently have my website and domain set up through other providers. I would like to build my Divi site first and then transfer/set up my existing domain. What is the best way to set up a temporary domain in the short-term while I’m building my website? (Thanks!)

You’ll get a free temporary domain when you get started. Just skip any of the paid domain options as you add your plan, so you can add your real domain when you’re ready.
Just note you will need a Business Plan to use Divi on our servers:

One follow-up: When I am setting up my WordPress account, there is a step (step 2) that tells me to transfer my domain to WordPress or map my domain. It appears that it won’t let me proceed with this step. Any thoughts on what needs to be done?

Don’t you get the Free .wordpress.com address option?
If you don’t see that option, make sure to only enter a site name in the first step, not a site address (URL).
