Domain still points to domain.wordpress.com after upgrade to premium
-
I started with a free plan and WordPress prompted me to choose and pay for a domain name. Later I realized that the domain would redirect/rewrite to my-domain-name-com.wordpress.com unless I had a paid plan, so I upgraded to premium, but the redirect is still happening. WordPress is now telling me I have a “free domain name available”, but it is useless to me because obviously I can not choose the domain I already registered.
I would like a refund for the domain I paid for so I can use my complimentary domain, and I would like that domain not to be redirected. How can I accomplish this?

Thanks for reaching out to us so we can help get things sorted. I’m working on the account and can see that there was a glitch with helixffc.com getting connected to your premium hosting plan. I’ve fixed that just now.
Now that I’ve made that change you should be able to indicate helixffc.com as the primary address for the project from this page by following these steps.
Let us know if more help is needed. Cheers!

Thank you for resolving the glitch!
I have a further question. I’m unhappy with the offerings of WordPress.com and have decided instead to host a WordPress.org site at another host. I’ve looked at transferring my domain name to the other host but WordPress is showing me that it is locked for a few weeks (is it automatically locked when you first buy it?).
Given the lock, I’m thinking of keeping the domain registered through WordPress.com, and pointing it to the other host. Can I do this while it is locked? If I cancel my premium plan, will I still own the domain and be able to configure DNS settings? I seem to have purchased the domain separately from the premium plan, but I wanted to make sure that upgrading to it has not entangled it somehow with that plan.

Hi there,
Indeed, all newly registered domains have a 60-day lock on them. This is not a WordPress.com-specific policy, but a general one that all registrars need to adhere to.
Even while the domain is locked, you can definitely keep it registered with WordPress.com and point it to your site hosted elsewhere. This can be accomplished by updating the domain’s DNS records. You can find step-by-step instructions on how to do that here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/change-name-servers/
Your domain and your premium plan are two distinct entities. Should you decide to cancel your premium plan, it will not affect your domain ownership or its settings. If you’d like guidance on how to cancel your plan, you can refer to this link: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/#cancel-a-plan
Lastly, we genuinely value feedback from our users. If you wouldn’t mind sharing, could you let us know what specifically you found unsatisfactory with WordPress.com? We’re always looking for ways to improve our platform, and your insights would be invaluable.
Wishing you all the best with your website journey, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any more questions or concerns.
