Domain Stuck After Canceling WordPress.com Subscription – Any Options?
-
Hello WordPress Community,
I’m a student and recently had a WordPress.com subscription with a custom domain. Because I couldn’t afford to continue, I canceled both the subscription and the domain, hoping it would be released. However, it still appears to be “active,” preventing me from registering it elsewhere with a more affordable provider.
My question: Is there any way to have this domain released before its official expiration date, without having to buy another plan here? I really don’t have the budget for additional renewal or transfer fees.
Thank you in advance for any advice or insights. I truly appreciate your help!WP.com: Yes

As you already found out, cancelling a domain when you want to reuse it elsewhere isn’t a good idea as the domain isn’t released immediately. You must wait untill a Staff member is online.

Hi there!
I completely understand wanting to keep costs down, and I wish there was a way to release it sooner, but unfortunately, domains follow a set expiration process.
I took a look, and I can see that your domain is currently in the redemption period. This means you still have the option to restore it by paying the redemption fee. Once it’s redeemed, you can either keep it on WordPress.com and point it to your site or transfer it to a different provider—totally up to you!
