domain to wpstaging.com issue

  • Unknown's avatar

I have recently began working my way towards starting a company and need a website for e-commerce. I know enough about the WYSIWYG aspects but am by no means a web expert.

I have a domain hosted through Hostinger but want to use WordPress for the actual site building. At first, I was just setting up the free WordPress site but decided to change to the Creator plan last night because I found a Partner theme (Bonum) that I wanted to use and get started setting up. However, the URL changed from this: https://mischagrace.wordpress.com/

    to this: https://mischagracecom.wpcomstaging.com/

Did I inadvertently create a new site? Am I able to remove the “staging” site and merge with my original “mischagrace.com” or do I need to cancel the Creator plan I just purchased?

I can’t seem to get anything to work now. Am I able to delete the “mischagrace.com” account, too, and start over or will I lose the ability to use this domain?

This is what I want: have the domain name be only “mischagrace.com”, use the Bonum theme compatible with WordPress, and start creating/customizing my site.

Please help me understand and resolve this.

    Thank you!

The site I need help with is: mischagracecom.wpcomstaging.com

    Hi there!

I’ll be happy to assist you with this today!

You’re on the right track so far! When you install plugins or third-party themes on a WordPress.com site that supports it, the underlying WordPress.com site address changes from .wordpress.com to .wpcomstaging.com. This is normal and is done for technical reasons.

When your site is ready, you will want to configure your domain by pointing it to WordPress.com nameservers or IP addresses (see the instructions here). Once the domain is configured, you will set your custom domain as the primary address. Then, your site will load at mischagrace.com.

To recap, you haven’t created a duplicate site. It’s the same site, with a slightly different underlying site address. When your domain is configured and set as primary, the same site will load when people go to mischagrace.com.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you for the quick response. I am hopeful things are on the right track, as you state.

I would like to clarify another related confusion. I read somewhere (after the fact) that there is a WordPress.com and a WordPress.org. I supposedly have a .org account because I am hosting externally (via Hostinger). The third-party theme I purchased is supported by the .com… will this still work with my .org account (if that’s even accurate). Somehow I have gotten all mixed up and the interface seems like there are two different sites, as well.

I suppose I can simply try to move forward and see what happens.

    Thanks,

To further clarify, I have a mischagrace.com dashboard. Underneath this on the left sidebar is Hostinger, then Dashboard. But nowhere does it give the option for ‘upgrade’. And when I click on the ‘visit site’, it shows powered by Astra, which isn’t the theme I want to use.

Then on another tabbed site, I have the mischagrace.wordpress.com and the .wpstaging.com. On the .wordpress.com, it provides the option to Upgrade, though I already upgraded to the ‘Creator’ plan a couple days ago. Why doesn’t this reflect that?

Does this mean I have duplicate sites? I do not want to pay for another plan for essentially the same website. Do I need to cancel and start over? Or is this all truly the same site, as you mentioned previously? I apologize in advance for the confusion. It would be helpful to allow photos.

    Thanks,

  • Hey there,

It sounds like you might have three websites in total. I am seeing two sites on your WordPress.com account, mischagrace.wordpress.com and mischagracecom.wpcomstaging.com. If you have a site with Hostinger that would be a third site. Your site mischagracecom.wpcomstaging.com is connected to your domain mischagrace.com and has your Creator plan upgrade.

I recommend using your mischagracecom.wpcomstaging.com site to build your website, since this site is connected to your domain and has the plan upgrade. The additional sites are not duplicates but are additional websites. There is no need for additional websites, so you can delete the extra sites if you wish, though currently, mischagrace.wordpress.com is on the free plan.

If you have a third-party theme you wish to use, you can certainly set this up with your site. We have a great help document to walk you through this process here:

    WP
    Themes » Upload a Theme

This feature is available on sites with the WordPress.com Creator or Entrepreneur plan. If your site has one of our legacy plans, it is available on the Pro plan. In addition to our collection of themes, you can upload third-party themes to your WordPress.com site, including themes from WordPress.org, popular marketplaces like Themeforest, and even themes you have custom-made for your websit

Any theme supported by WordPress.com should in theory work with WordPress.org, however, we do not provide support for WordPress.org sites.

    Hope this helps!
