  Hi there,

  To use a domain with a site created on WordPress.com, you have to host it here, as hosting refers to the fact that the domain is connected to a site that is on our servers.

  But you don’t have to transfer a domain to us to host it here. Domain registration and hosting are two different things, and you can have a domain registration at one provider while hosting the domain at another provider. This is done via a process called domain mapping. More details in the link provided above.
