  I am about to build a new website through wordpress. I am happy to transfer my domain over but do not want to lose our current site until the new one is ready. Could someone please explain this to me?

  You can get a free wordpress.com website with a .wordpress.com subdomain and use it to learn how to use WordPress.

  You can get the free WordPress site at the following link.

  Once you are ready then you can transfer your current domain over to WordPress.
