domain transfer
-
Hello, what are the (dis)advantages of transferring a domain, if any?
I just registered one a few days ago with another provider (for two years), it’ll be a brand new site I want to build in WP. Thank you. -
Hi there,
The only possible disadvantage is that the annual renewal cost with us could be slightly higher than at your current provider (but then again it might be lower). Either way, whether you transfer or map it here, you will need to have your WordPress.com site on one of our paid plans, but if you transfer the domain to us using the free domain credit in your plan, the domain is also renewed for an additional year, so even if there’s a different in domain renewal cost, you’ll likely save some money in the long run.
If you plan to have a very complex DNS setup, with tons of subdomains, email, proxies configured at the DNS level, etc, it will be better to keep your domain at your current provider and use their DNS manager, and just point the domain to us using IP addresses.
If you just want a website with its own domain on WordPress.com, though, transferring the domain to us is ultimately more convenient, as you’ll be able to manage your domain and site in the same place, and you just pay one company to renew everything each year.
That said, new domains cannot be transferred between domain providers for 60 days after registration, so you’ll have to map the domain for now in any case. But once it becomes eligible for transfer, you’ll be able to transfer it to us at no additional cost as long as the free domain credit in your plan is still available at that point.
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
