  If have my current domain mapped, can I then later transfer it once I have my new site up and running? Trying to avoid not having a site up and running even though my current site is terrible.

  Yes, of course. You can even wait with the domain mapping and just build your site using the free .wordpress.com subdomain and map or transfer your custom domain when you’re ready to launch.
