Domain Transfer

    I own 6 domains at webs.com.
    Only 1, is an actual website.
    I built a NEW free website on WordPress that I like more than the website that I have on webs.com.
    I want to transfer all 6 domains to WordPress & use the newly built WordPress website.

    Do I still have to do the plan subscription of $48/year if I’m doing the 1 free website?
    Do I still have to do a Site Redirect for the 1 free website?

    Hi there,

    Could you clarify a few things?

    If you want the domain to show up as the primary address, you will need a plan. Then the domain mapping is free, even if you want all 6 domains to point to the same primary domain.

    If you want to transfer the registrations here (so you would be paying us $18/year per domain to keep them registered) you can do that too. You could redirect the domains to the free wordpress.com address, or to one custom domain if you have a paid plan.

    Yes, I’d just like to keep the other 5 domains under WordPress, rather than webs. I will not be making these web addresses live, I just want to own them. Is that the same as registering? Is that the $18/year, just for housing them under WordPress, but not using them?

    I’m currently on a paid plan of $35/mo. 1 web address is live, the other 6 point to the live address. It’s quite expensive when all I need is the free website.

    Our upgrade plans include domain mapping which is a way for you to connect a domain you own with another company (say you already have a domain with someone else for example) and make that the custom address of your WordPress.com site.

    Basically it’s a way to remove the “wordpress.com” address we assign your site, and have it show up at another address instead.

    A site redirect is very different. It is intended for situations where you have had a WordPress.com site with us for some time, but are planning to move to another provider. In that case you can add a site redirect, so send traffic from your WordPress.com site to an address on another provider, so no traffic is lost.

    To “keep” your domains here you would need to transfer them from the company you have now to us. This is not free (like domain mapping) so you would need to pay to transfer each domain to us, and then pay us yearly to renew the domain. I’m happy to confirm our prices for this if you can list for me the domains you plan to transfer, but for example a .com domain would be US $18 to transfer, and then $18/yr to renew after that.

    You have not mentioned any site URLs so I am not able to look into what you have now, but it sounds like it would be less costly to manage your domains here, but you will need a plan (Personal, Premium, Business, etc.) on your total costs would depend on which plan you decide to use, as well as the domains you plan to transfer, so we’d need a bit more info before I could give you a solid number.

    Thanks for the help! These are my 6 web addresses (in CAPS), all located at webs.com. I’d like to move everything under WordPress.

    http://www.FORAGEPETFOODS.com, this is my official website.
    I made a new, near exact replica, at WordPress (www.foragepetfood.wordpress.com) & I’d like to use the WordPress design instead of the old design I made at webs. I’d like to not have ‘wordpress’ in my website address & reflect only: http://www.foragepetfoods.com.
    I am interested in just the personal website, the free one that I made.
    So do I just need to select the WordPress personal plan so that I may remove “wordpress” from my live website at $48? How long before it becomes live during this transfer?

    These sites, I just want to house/own under WordPress. No site, no re-direct, no mapping. No live website. I just want to retain the domain. Sounds like $18/year for each of these?:

    Correct, the plan includes one free domain transfer, and you can use that to move foragepetfoods.com over to your WordPress.com account. The amount of time a transfer can take will vary (up to 5 days, but usually within 48 hours) and that is not under our control, but something that your current registrar may be able to expedite if you ask.

    The cost to transfer foragepetfoods.com will be included in your plan, so you would not have to pay $18 to renew this domain until the following year.

    I do not see that you have upgraded yet, so once you have added the WordPress.com Personal Plan to your account let us know and we can walk you through the transfer process.

    You are correct that to transfer those domains is $18 each, and then $18/yr next year to renew each one.

    We do not have a way to “park” the domains since we are not a full service domain company, so once you move them here they would redirect to foragepetfoods.com.

    That seems unlikely though, as I am guessing those URLs get no traffic currently as they are not associated with any websites, and probably not addresses that people type in at random.

    Ok, I have purchased the Personal plan for http://www.foragepetfoods.com & the transfer is in progress.

    Correct, those other domains receive no traffic. Looks like I need to wait until the transfer is complete to “park” these other domains under WordPress…
