Domain transfer

  I already have an existing website with a different provider but want to build a new site using WordPress. I want to keep my existing website live until such time I’m ready to ‘go live’ with my WordPress site. How can I build the WordPress site without transferring the domain?

  Hi there,

  When you start a new site, you can choose to set it up under the free “wordpress.com” URL we assign at the time it is created. This will give you a site you can set up at an address that no one knows but you, so you can complete your work in private.

  As soon as you feel your site is ready to launch, you can transfer your domain at that time as the final step. Once the domain it transferred you can assign it to the new site you set up here at WordPress.com and that will “launch” it and replace your old site with the new one.

  One question I have, I noticed that you upgraded to the Premium plan and added the domain liberationdriving.com to your account. Is this a domain you plan to use? The reason I ask is because your plan comes with either a free domain or a free transfer of your existing domain.

  Since you mentioned you already have a domain in use (on your current site) let us know if you will not need liberationdriving.com. We can remove it from your account and reset the “domain credit” so you can use it for a free domain transfer (when you are ready) instead.

  Hi there

  Thank you, that’s really helpful.
  And you’re correct, liberationdriving isn’t the domain I will be using. I just thought I needed to create a dummy name in order to register and open a blank page?
  I will be pointing my existing domain to WordPress when it is ready.

  Howdy! Thanks so much for getting back to us with that.

  We have removed the dummy domain for you.

  And we have restored the original domain credit that came along with your plan.

  Once you are ready to ‘go live’ you can use the credit to transfer the domain from where it is registered now, to your account here at WordPress.com.
