Domain transfer
-
I transitioned my domain from WordPress to Tumblr on January 27, 2025. I’ve enjoyed my time on Tumblr and have posted over 1,000 times in the two months since making the switch, with 16 days left in this period. However, last night, I discovered that Tumblr’s mobile app is not available on the Play Store in India. Upon inquiring about this, I learned that the app is partially banned in India. I’m not sure when this happened, but it has left me feeling concerned. I don’t want to risk losing my site in the future, especially since Tumblr could potentially face a complete ban in India.
Currently, I’m unable to transfer the domain because it is still in a 16-day lock-in period. I can wait this out, but I’m wondering if I will need to pay for another year to transfer the domain afterward. Since WordPress and Tumblr are both part of the same company, is there any way to bypass these restrictions and transfer my domain now?

1. Transferring the Domain:
Since your domain is currently in a 16-day lock-in period (which is typical after a transfer), you will have to wait until the lock-in period ends. After this period, you should be able to transfer your domain to another registrar if you’re still concerned about the situation with Tumblr. 2. Do You Need to Pay for Another Year?
Typically, when transferring a domain, the domain’s registration is extended for another year, so you’d be paying for an additional year of service. This is a standard practice, meaning that after the 16-day lock-in period, you’d be charged for another year upon completing the transfer. 3. Transferring Between WordPress and Tumblr:
Although WordPress and Tumblr are both owned by the same parent company (Automattic), they operate on different platforms and systems. You can’t bypass the lock-in period or restrictions for domain transfers between WordPress and Tumblr. You’ll need to wait for the lock-in to expire and then initiate the transfer process. 4. What to Do Now:
- Wait for the lock-in period to end: As mentioned, you’ll need to wait out the 16 days before proceeding with a transfer.
- Ensure your domain is unlocked: Once the lock-in period ends, you’ll be able to unlock your domain from the current registrar.
- Monitor the situation in India: Keep an eye on any potential changes in regulations or bans related to Tumblr in India. If you’re still concerned about the possibility of Tumblr facing a complete ban, it might be a good idea to transfer your domain to another platform sooner rather than later.
- Consider alternatives: If Tumblr’s restrictions become more of an issue, you could look at alternative blogging platforms or consider transferring your content to a more widely accessible platform, such as WordPress.com or other blogging services.
5. Check with Tumblr Support:
It might also be a good idea to reach out to Tumblr support directly to get clarification on any future plans regarding the app in India, especially if you have concerns about losing access to your content or the platform.
Ultimately, while you’ll have to wait for the lock-in period to end, you should be able to transfer the domain to a new platform once that happens. Keep monitoring the situation with Tumblr in India to ensure you’re prepared for any changes.
