  I have bought materials advertising bencoreyforlynnwood.wordpress.com, but now I would like to upgrade to bencoreyforlynnwood.com. If I do this through wordpress, can it be the case that bencoreyforlynnwood.wordpress.com would direct traffic to bencoreyforlynnwood.com?

  Yes, if you are registering a domain via WordPress.COM, your new domain(bencoreyforlynnwood.com) will be automatically to your site and your old sub-domain bencoreyforlynnwood.wordpress.com will automatically redirect to bencoreyforlynnwood.com.
