domain transfer
-
I don’t use this blog, I had to sign up for a wordpress account in order to be able to be an admin to another wordpress website so I can work with it and update it.
I have a friend who has just asked me to run her website, update it, design it, etc. She has her own paid domain but has never done anything with it. Her web designer has given me a code to be able to transfer that domain to where I need it to go but I don’t know how to do that. Is there a way to transfer that domain/website to this one:
ambershome.wordpress.com
so I can work with it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am not clear on what you are actually asking about.
The top level domain here is wordpress.com and all sites hosted here on wordpress.com servers are on .wordpress.com sub domains like http://ambershome.wordpress.com/
Domain mapping is not done free of charge: an upgrade is required.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/
We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.
How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-startedWordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

ambershome.com is hosted by Acquia Hosting
Name Servers:
ns1.namebrightdns.com
ns2.namebrightdns.comThat site is not on our WordPress.COM servers. You are posting to the wrong support forum to get support for it. Also be aware of who the web host is for that site and contact them for any hosting issues.
This is wordpress.COM support. We do not provide support for local installs of wordpress.ORG software, or for wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
wordpress.org support
The wordpress.ORG support forum is at http://wordpress.org/support. The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org

Thank you for all that info I appreciate it. I guess this would help
my wordpress website, ambershome.wordpress.com I don’t use, I was told I had to create a wordpress account to be able to become an admin for a charity webpage (freedomfarmforvets.org) I post and add things to. So I have essentially an empty blog page (if I can call it that) sitting here.
A friend is starting up her own business and wants me to post and update her website just like I do to my charity. She says she has her own domain. http://www.JAIDAdisplays.com. if you go to that website, there is nothing there but her logo. She wants to change her website address to JAIDAdisplayslc3.com and then have me build it. I was wondering since I have ambershome.wordpress.com as nothing, can I change the name to what my friend wants her website to be and start to post and edit that way? I guess I thought domain transfer would have something to do with all of this but it seems as if I am wrong.
I would love to be able to use wordpress for both websites since I am already fairly used to learning how to use it with my charity.
i hope this makes sense, some of this stuff is all new to me
Thanks for your help

Hi there,
I was wondering since I have ambershome.wordpress.com as nothing, can I change the name to what my friend wants her website to be and start to post and edit that way?
You can absolutely do that. In fact, you could create a different free address as well if you didn’t want to use the one matching your username.
Just keep in mind that we have some limitations in terms of what you can do on WordPress.com, but as your friend’s site is currently just a static page with an image on it, there isn’t currently an issue of importing content, plugins, templates, etc. So as long as you and your friend are happy with working within the limitations that comes with having a WordPress.com site, you can connect her domain to a site in your account.
It’s not possible to transfer the domain to us, so she’ll need to leave it with the current domain provider, but you can connect it here via a process called domain mapping. To map a domain, first you’ll need to buy a plan at My Site ->Plans, and then you can add the domain at My Site ->Domains, as explained here:
Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)
Let me know if you have any questions.

ok thank you, so I signed her up and her address is JAIDAdisplayslc3.wordpress.com for the free plan. now what she wants to have as her web address is JAIDAdisplayslc3.com so to do that she would need to purchase an upgrade, correct? am I able to start working on her website now and then when I meet with her we can transfer to a upgraded plan? will everything I have done save?
-
To add that domain she will have to purchase a plan first, yes, but it’s safe for you to already start working on the site before that. Adding a plan and domain to a site just activates the extra features, but it won’t affect the content in any way. Likewise, should you cancel the plan in future, it will just remove the features, while the content will still remain unchanged.
