Domain Transfer
-
I recently purchased a subscription with WordPress.com and received a free domain. At the time, I didn’t realize that WordPress.com and WordPress.org are separate. What I originally wanted was WordPress.org so once I found that out, I cancelled my wordpress.com account but kept my domain. Is there any way I can easily transfer my domain from WordPress .com to my WordPress.org site without having to wait the required 60 days by ICANN to transfer the domain? Any help will be appreciated.

There is no way to circumvent the ICANN requirement. However, you can change the nameservers if you purchase the domain through WordPress.com.

Considering I received the domain for free from WordPress when I purchased a business account, I’m guessing it’s through them. Do you think it would be a better option to change the nameservers or just wait out the 60 days and then transfer the domain?

I would go with the changing nameservers but I’m only a Volunteers so let’s get Staff to respond here. I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

Hi there,
What is the domain, please? The account you’re using to post here has never bought any plans from us, and does not own any domains.
If the domain was bought less than 60 days ago there is no way to transfer it. That waiting period applies to all new domains at all domain providers, and we have no way to bypass it.
But nothing prevents you from pointing the domain to another host by changing the name servers as @timethief explained above. To do that you will need to be logged into the account that owns the domain.

These options are not exclusive. Change the name servers now, then you can already start setting up your site at your other hosting provider.
Once the 60 days are up you can then initiate a transfer to them. As your domain will already be pointed to them at that point, your site should continue to function normally during the transfer – someone visiting your site will not even know that there are changes happening behind the scenes.

My apologies, I have 2 different accounts and accidentally posted on my old account. I actually found a very helpful post on your support page for changing the name servers. Will this affect SEO at all? The domain is trustedwebreviews.com. Your help is much appreciated!

Whether your domain is registered at your host, or merely pointed to them via name servers, should have no effect on your SEO, no. And as this domain and the site you’re creating is brand new, it will take some time for the site to be indexed by search engines anyway.
But as long as the domain is correctly loading the site, and set as the primary URL on your hosting provider’s end, the domain should not affect your SEO.

Okay great! You have been very helpful. I do however have one last question. I plan to host my site with GoDaddy and I will receive a free domain with them as well. If I accept the domain, can I still set my WordPress domain as my primary domain over the GoDaddy domain that I purchase through them? I just want to make sure that the original domain I purchased through WordPress is the primary one that is used for my website. Thanks!

I’d suggest you ask GoDaddy if you can use that free domain to connect the domain you already bought from us for now, and then transfer it in after 60 days without having to pay again at that point.
But if you do register another domain with them, they would be the best people to ask how to go about setting a primary domain on the site. That is something that’s controlled by your hosting provider, which in this case would be GoDaddy, and I don’t know how that process works with them. But I can’t think that it won’t be possible – you should be able to control which domain is used for your site if you have multiple domains connected, no matter where you are hosted.
