Domain transfer

Hi, I’m in an awkward position and I’m relatively new to all this. I hope I can explain it all clearly… I currently have a domain name: theArtiist.com, and it’s being hosted by GoDaddy. this is an old web I wireframed and created some years ago, but it’s very outdated and functionally horrible.
I want to switch to WordPress, xfer my domain name over, but I don’t want to transfer my web content (undergraduate art portfolio). I essentially want to keep that separated and I want to start afresh with all of my current artwork. I still want to keep my old art and possibly have a link for it– theArtiistundergraduatework or something like that… What is the best way I should go about all of this??? to recap: xfer domain name and hosting to Word Press. During this process, DON’T lose any of my web content/ art images that is currently with GoDaddy– possibly import that entire web to WordPress under a differet web name or link within my new website? Please help, let me know if any of that make sense. thanks, Dave

  • Hi Dave,

The old site is in flash, and that wouldn’t be supported on our platform. If you want to keep it just as it is but use your name for a new site, here’s what I would do:

    – Set up a subdomain, such as undergrad.theArtiist.com, and keep that hosted where it is now

    – Set up your WordPress installation at theArtiist.com

    – Link the two together if you’d like :)

If you don’t want to keep the hosting with GoDaddy, you could start a site here and copy your portfolio work over as you’d like. It just would not be displayed in a flash format. Then you could have it all under an “undergraduate” tab if you’d like, or simply tag those projects with undergrad, or organize things how you’d like. Again, the only thing is you would need to copy the content over, and it would not be in a flash format.

If there are pages I’m missing beyond the flash homepage (which didn’t respond to clicks) let me know and we’ll take a look at those.

Thanks for responding. Again, I’m very new to all this. So here’s my fear… I’m afraid that during this awkward transition, I will lose my domain name and someone else will swoop up on it, or I’ll lose all my art images on my current godaddy account. In addition, I no longer have access to all of my art portfolio images that are on my current web page– they were destroyed in my hardrive. So this is why I don’t want to lose those during this process. And yes, there are many more images on my website, just click on one of the genre tabs, and a drop menu will appear, etc…

I understand making a subdomain name– undergrad.theartiist.com Do I do this with GoDaddy? and what happens to my TheArtiist.com domain name?

So, I honestly need a step on how to do this. I want to join with you all, but I need some assistance, I don’t want to screw this up. Once I get my domain name established with you, and my current undergrad art portfolio safely secure, I can’t take it from there and begin customizing my new web page.

Another question, so I could keep my godaddy account, have it saved as undergrad.theartiist.com then have a link on my new website directing to it?????? What is the best way of going about this?

I really do appreciate your time. I know you get a TON of questions and people asking for your help. But if you could deliberately help me with this transition, you would be doing a great service. I really need this website up and going.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

    Hi theartiist,

So here’s my fear… I’m afraid that during this awkward transition, I will lose my domain name and someone else will swoop up on it

As long as the domain is owned by you, it can’t be registered by someone else. You would need to cancel it or let it expire for this to happen. So don’t worry, setting up a subdomain won’t put you at risk.

I also wanted to expand on the “WordPress Installation” @supernovia mentioned. There are two types of WordPress:

    1. WordPress.org: where WordPress.org software is installed on a third party host like GoDaddy and maintained (security etc) by you.
    2. WordPress.com: where sites are created and hosted here on WordPress.com.

We have some more information about the differences between the two here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

I think the first decision needs to be whether you want to use WordPress.org software and continue using GoDaddy as your host? Or whether you would like to host the site on WordPress.com instead?

The decision will affect how/where the domain is used so it would be great to know this first — then we can look at the best way forward.

    Thanks!
