Domain Transfer

    Hi support team,

I am looking for pieces of information that I could not find while reading the support blog regarding domain transfer. I contacted the host of my current domain http://www.freelogoservices.com and they are asking me for the information below:

    – Nameservers: DNS1*
    – Zone Files – Update the IP in the A records for the www + @ to the new IP, then click Update My Zone File

Could you assist me with this query?

    Thanks,
    Christophe

  • Hi there,

So you want to transfer that domain to us?

I contacted the host of my current domain http://www.freelogoservices.com and they are asking me for the information below:

    – Nameservers: DNS1*

We recommend that you don’t change the name servers before you transfer the domain – unless you then also add a mapping upgrade on our end first, that will result in your domain going offline between the name servers being changed, and the domain transfer completing. Domain transfers typically take around a week.

Please leave the domain pointed to your current provider so your current site stays online through the transfer, and then you can point the domain to us once it’s finished moving over to us.

Also, if you have content on the existing site that you need to transfer to your WordPress.com site, you should do that before switching the domain to point to us.

    – Zone Files – Update the IP in the A records for the www + @ to the new IP, then click Update My Zone File

I’m not sure I understand what they want here. If they point the name servers to us, your domain will immediately stop using their DNS, so there’s no point in providing them with a zone file. Once you transfer the domain to us we’ll automatically create a zone file on our end and import the DNS records from your zone file with the current provider.

Your current domain provider should not be requiring anything from you to start a transfer. All they need to do on their end is unlock the domain and provide you with the EPP code so you can initiate the transfer on our end.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this.
