Domain Transfer
-
I registered my domain in Name Cheap. Do I really have to pay 18 dollars to transfer my domain from Name Cheap to Word Press? It just seems like another fee they throw on? Is there a way around this? It seems as if I have no choice but to pay if I want my website created.

It will cost more than $18 I’m afraid. To map or transfer a domain you own elsewhere to a WordPress.com site will require a Personal plan or higher. (Upgrades are charged annually (or for 2 years) in advance. Domains can be transferred when you have owned them for at least 60 days.

Hi there,
Just to clarify, this isn’t an “extra fee”, as what you paid to Namecheap has nothing to do with any service provided by us – we are two completely different companies.
You paid Namecheap for a domain. You possibly paid them for hosting as well, in which case you can create a site using the free, open source WordPress software found on WordPress.org. If you do that you will not be using any of our services on WordPress.com, so you won’t have to pay us anything.
But if you want to use that domain with a site hosted on WordPress.com’s servers, we charge for the service we provide to let you connect or transfer that domain here.
