Domain Transfer – Afterwards?

  • Unknown's avatar

When you transfer a wp.com blog to another domain using domain mapping:

Does the old blog effectively die with no more googlebot activity?
If not what do I need to do to shut it down? (Don’t want duplicate content issues).
Will the incoming links transfer, in the long term do I need to modifiy them to point to the new domain?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

    1.
If not already done so, register your old wordpress.com blog for Google Webmaster Tools

    2.
    In your old wordpress.com blog
    Settings > Privacy
make sure it’s not crawled by search engines

    3.
Using Google Webmaster Tools, ask for a removal of your old wordpress.com blog from Google’s index

(that said, just #2 will do it, but adding #3 will make it faster)

Incoming links should automatically redirect, no need to do anything…besides paying WP for domain mapping every year.
