domain transfer and current wordpress.com links
-
I have a domain registered with GoDaddy and a redirect to WordPress. When I transfer my domain to wordpress with a plan and upgrade from a free hosting, will my links that currently have ‘xxxxx.wordpress.com/xxxx’ become invalid? Will they default to ‘mydomainname.com/xxxxx’ or will I have to change them wherever they are listed? I am ready to purchase a plan and transfer my domain to WP but am a little nervous about this question.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @heartouch,
When you upgrade from free hosting to paid plan, “wordpress” will be eliminated from your site address.
For example: raphaelweisman.wordpress.com is a URL for free hosting. After upgrade, it will become raphaelweisman.com. Your data will stay intact for the site.

How about links to pages that have the “.wordpress.com” in their address which I have listed in my literature, on FB and on my other sites, will they autoconvert when someone clicks on them?
Also, do I need to backup my site before transfer. I can’t use a plug in until I have a plan -
Hi there,
All existing links on your WordPress.com site will continue working. The free http://raphaelweisman.wordpress.com/ address will not go away completely, but will still exist in the background, and any links referencing that address will automatically redirect to the custom domain you add.

If you’re speaking of the WordPress.com site, no. That site will not be affected in any way by the domain transfer. The new domain will just be added to the site.
Think of it as putting a dust-jacket on a book. It changes how it looks from the outside, but the book itself remains exactly the same. Adding a custom domain on a WordPress.com site is the same principle.
