Domain Transfer for use with email forwarding
-
Howdy folks, I have a domain registered elsewhere that is currently forwarding to my WordPress.com site.
Because of upcoming changes at that registrar concerning email, would it be possible for me to transfer the domain registration to WordPress.com (including privacy) and use it with email forwarding? I don’t need it to be the Primary domain on my site.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
yarnaholic.com is your custom domain, yes? You can transfer it to be under your WordPress.com account if you wish, by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/domains/add/transfer/yarnaholic.wordpress.com
This will move the domain to your WordPress.com account, and then we will handle the redirection to yarnaholic.wordpress.com. As well you can set up email forwarding by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/email-forwarding/
Also, you may wish to consider upgrading to the yearly version of our Personal Plan, which will include a free domain transfer at no added cost. This plan will also turn off all the ads we show on your site (we do this on free sites only) and will also allow you to drop the “wordpress.com” URL and use yarnaholic.com as your official site address. More info here:

Hi again, thanks for the quick reply. What is the cost for domain transfer if not done as part of upgrading?
BTW- I did not receive any notification of your reply although the email I received following form submission said “We have automatically subscribed you to email updates on the forum thread.” I checked my email’s spam folder, etc. I will subscribe now.

Hello there,
The cost of the transfer could depend on the actual domain itself, as different suffixes carry different costs. On average this is around $18.
With a plan, there would be no transfer fee.
What is the domain you’re looking to transfer out of curiosity?

Hi, It’s the one staff-totoro mentioned earlier and it was connected to my WordPress.com site for a short time at one point in the past.
So if I understand correctly, US$18 for the domain transfer which includes an additional year of domain registration, correct?
After I transfer the domain, it will forward to my wordpress.com address and I’ll be able to use it for email forwarding, correct?
Thanks again.

Have you read https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/email-forwarding/
PS: I think things work better here with a paid plan. Otherwise your custom domain will work but your site will still display an address ending in .wordpress.com.

Hi @themagicrobot- thanks for the link, which staff-totoro shared earlier. Was there something in particular you wanted me to note there?
For most of the 17 or so years my site has been on WordPress.com, it has appeared at the underlying WordPress.com address with a forward from my current registrar. I also mentioned in my original post that I do not need my custom domain to be Primary, which requires an upgrade plan. I only need to have the domain forward to my site and be able to use it for email forwarding.
I’m inquiring now in order to be able to determine my costs for the coming years since there are changes afoot at my current registrar which will add costs there.

Hello there,

Correct, as part of the transfer process, your domain will be renewed for an additional year. If you just renewed the domain with your current provider, you will not lose that renewal.
After I transfer the domain, it will forward to my wordpress.com address and I’ll be able to use it for email forwarding, correct?
It’s possible to use email forwarding.
The domain will forward to the WordPress.com address, without a paid plan by default. If you wish to forward the WordPress.com address to the domain, there would need to be a paid plan in place. (Just to double clarify that :) )
