domain transfer from Hostgator to here

  Hostgator emails me saying my domain name will expire on Aug 8, 2012. I want to change it so that it is registered with WordPress instead of Hostgator. I don’t want to lose the domain name in the process. Do I wait for it to expire and then register it as an update or do I need to go to Hostgator and undo / detach it from their hosting before I will be able to register it here as a “new” domain name?

  We cannot accept incoming domain transfers, but you can map it here following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

  I do not recommend allowing it to expire, as expired domain become the property of their registrar and are only returned to the public market at their discretion.
