Domain Transfer gone wrong
-
I am currently trying to transfer a domain for a client. The client had a paid plan with WordPress and the domain was associated with it. I changed the nameservers to point to my hosting and it worked. My client then downgraded their plan to free and lost control of the domain at the point where I had started the transfer process. So they no longer are in a position to provide an authorisation code. How do I now proceed? Is there a way I can talk to WordPress?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
The account you’re using to post here does not own any sites or any domains on WordPress.com.
Can you please provide exact details on what you’re trying to do, including the exact domain, site and accounts involved?
Only the account that owns a domain on WordPress.com has the ability to transfer the domain somewhere else, and downgrading a WordPress.com plan will not cause someone to lose access of a domain they own – they’d need to very explicitly cancel the domain to do that, which is a separate step with it’s own confirmation required to complete.

I am trying to transfer fultonverse.com from WordPress to me through my domain registrar. My client downgraded their WP plan to free before I could complete the process. We are now struggling to contact WP about the matter.

Hi. I want fultonverse.com to be transferred so I can self-host it.
My webdesigner has begun the transfer process but cannot progress. I have downgraded to free and can’t seem to access what I need to.

Hi _ Katya Robin (katyarobin) here. I run FultonVerse. The situation is exactly as stevedeedah has described. I downgraded the plan so it wouldn’t auto-renew and to make the domain available for self-hosting via stevedeedah.
We need to get the domain and site active again ASAP. Thank you. -
Hi @katyarobin, while logged into the katyarobin account, go to https://wordpress.com/domains/manage, lick on the domain name you wish to transfer and then click on Transfer Domain. There are full instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/
Let us know if you have any issues in that process.

Hi there,
Can you please type (not paste) the authorization code? Please note that the code is case-sensitive.

To which registrar are you trying to transfer? That message means your new registrar is trying to verify the transfer by sending an email to the admin contact email showing in the Whois lookup for your domain, but that will not work.
On 25 May the new EU privacy law known as the GDPR came into effect, and under that law it is illegal to show information like someone’s email address in a public database like a Whois lookup. This only apply to EU citizens, but as we have no way to know which domain owners are EU citizens and who not, most domain providers are now showing redacted Whois data for all domain owners, regardless of location or citizenship. That email address you referenced above is now what a Whois lookup for your domain will show, and there is no way to force it to show your real email address.
This has caused the entire domains industry to change the way we handle transfers, and under ICANN regulations it is no longer necessary to confirm a transfer via that email.
It looks like your new registrar has not yet updated their processes to comply with the new requirements, and this is something they’ll need to fix on their end. Please share the information at https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/#what-if-my-new-registrar-says-they-cant-start-my-transfer-because-my-contact-information-is-not-public with the registrar you’re trying to transfer to. Only they can fix this.
