Domain Transfer or Map

  We have a website for our business currently with Shopify (domain hosted with GoDaddy), and would like to now transfer to a WordPress site as we no longer need the eCommerce side. First of all, I was wondering if transferring or mapping the domain would be a better choice. Also – once we do decide to do either, will our old site still be accessible until we go live with the new site? Thanks.

  First of all, I was wondering if transferring or mapping the domain would be a better choice.

  With mapping, the domain will remain registered with GoDaddy. This process creates a connection between the domain and WordPress.com — the domain will still need to be renewed through Godaddy each year, in addition to renewing the plan you purchased through WordPress.com. In the easiest way to explain this would be, GoDaddy will remain your
  https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

  Transferring the domain from GoDaddy to WordPress.com means it will be registered and renewed through WordPress.com each year. This option would be better if you want to manage the site and domain through one account:
  https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

  Both options will require a paid plan .

  As I could not be quite sure on how to answer you with this, I looked up the forum to find you an answer from an authentic source. Quoting a staff member @kokkieh’s advice below:

  Also note that when you transfer a domain to us, it will still be pointing to your current hosting – we don’t automatically switch the domain to our hosting once it transfers.
  In other words, even if you transfer it immediately, it will still show your current site, and it will only start showing your WordPress.com site once you tell us to switch it.
