Domain transfer or mapping
-
I have an existing domain on Google My Business. If I transfer or map to WordPress, will my existing site disappear on Google?
I want to build a new site on WordPress and decommission the Google site once WordPress site is completed, how is that possible? -
Hi there,
Your site won’t disappear, no. But as you’ll likely have different content here than you have on the current site, or at the very least because the content will no longer be at the same exact links. So Google and other search engines will need to re-index your content on the new site. This process takes a few weeks, and you’ll see a drop in traffic from search engines during this time, but once your site is re-indexed everything should be back to normal.
As you’ll be using the same domain, your Google My Business listing should also keep working as far as I know, but it’s best to contact Google directly to find out if you’ll need to change or re-verify anything on their end after the change.

Wordpress is prompting me to transfer the domain name. Can I build a new site with wordpress in preview mode without transferring the domain name, so I still have my current site accessible? When the wordpress site is completed, then I will do the domain transfer.

You certainly can get your site set up here before switching your domain over!
When you sign up for a new site, we give you a free subdomain (*.wordpress.com) that you can use to start building your new site.
Here’s a guide that will help you migrate your site to WordPress.com:
