Domain transfer question
-
Hi Guys, we have setup a namecheap account for managing our domain (currently controlled and purchased through wordpress).
I just want to check that if we transfer the domain from WordPress to Namecheap that:
- Our domain will still point at the wordpress nameserves andas such the website will still be accessible at http://www.twinsthattravel.com?
Once we have created our new website, we can then change the nameserver to the new host. We just need to be sure there will be no disruption to the current blog by transferring the domain now.
Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi twinsthattravel,
Yes, that sounds right! Your website should still be accessible, with no downtime at all.
Do note that you’ll have to continue renewing the Domain Mapping upgrade every year if you would like to continue pointing your domain to WordPress.com.
Please feel free to post back if you have any further questions!

Thank you for your help. I suspected as much!
Do you know what the wordpress.com A record details are?
When I transfer the domain I need to then point it at new nameservers whilst I build a new site on a sub domain, but need to keep the existing wordpress.com site up on the current server.

Put in the name servers at Name Cheap for WordPress.COM – should be no need to mess with IP numbers or anything else – I have a domain name at Name Cheap and have the name servers set to here – then I have my email at another host and I have some custom MX records here to make my custom email work

Thanks for your help so far guys.
Auxclass – the whole idea for transferring the domain to another provider is because we don’t want the wordpress.com site to handle the DNS (it is too restrictive).
I need to repoint it to new nameservers where our new site will be hosted. Whilst we build the new site on a subdomain I just wanted to ensure the .com site remains live, until I am ready to transfer it.
Valentine – of the IP’s used, is there any way to determine which one our site is using?
Thanks!

No – WordPress.COM does not have static IP addresses and they change constantly based on server load and system upgrades and normal system maintenance

Thanks guys, understood.
Will the existing site be available once I have transferred the domain to a new provider and repointed the DNS? e.g. at the original wordpress address twinsthattravel.wordpress.com?

Yes, it still will be! You might want to change the primary domain of your blog to twinsthattravel.wordpress.com before the transfer goes through though, just in case your links break. Here’s a support article that shows you how:
