Domain transfer question, please

  I think I understand how to redirect my domain name from where it is now to my wordpress blog, once I upgrade to Personal. I don’t understand about the annual ‘ownership’/rental of the name. I pay for it now, but WP says it is free with the upgraded account. How does that work? Is there someway I transfer supervision of the name (whatever it is called) from the company that now handles it for me, to WordPress who would then not charge for it since it is part of the upgrade? Is this process explained somewhere I have not yet found?
