Domain Transfer v. Domain Mapping

  • Unknown's avatar

I already own a custom domain name with Go Daddy. I purchased it last week. From what I have understood, whether I transfer my domain or map my domain to WordPress, I will need one of the paid plans. In either case, the cost of a personal plan which is what I would purchase will remain the same. My question how should I decide whether it is better to transfer my domain or map it to WordPress? Both seem the same to me. Please help.

Basically, if you map your domain, you’ll continue renewing its registration with your current provider. You will pay them to renew each year.

If you transfer, you’ll pay for registration renewals here. The first year is included with the plan. After that you’ll pay these rates for renewals:

    Domain Pricing and Available TLDs

Transferring is nice if you want all of your payments related to your site and domain in one place. And you get the first year free.

Mapping is nice if you have your domain registered for a long time elsewhere, if transfer isn’t available for your domain, if you’re using a subdomain, or if you’ve determined you’ll save by keeping it where it is. Just be sure to keep your domain renewed through its existing registrar.

Let us know if this helps, or if you need more information. Cheers!
