  Hi, I would like to rebuild my site in wordpress (currently in WIX). Is there an option to rebuild the site before I swap the domain over? WordPress is asking me to transfer the domain before I start the work. I’m worried about the site being down whilst I rebuild it. Many thanks in advance!

  Good morning –

  I’m happy to help. Leave the current domain and site alone until you have the new site on WordPress.com ready to go. This will limit any SEO impact.

  Build your site out on the address that we give you. It’s a free one. A plan can be added to it if you like. But, there’s no need to connect the domain until the project is finished.

  You can even hide the new site and keep it private. That is just a simple setting change: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

  When it’s time to connect the domain you can click on My Sites – Domains – Add (and then choose map or transfer).
