Domain troubles

  • Unknown's avatar

I did not renew my domain recently so it expired. I am now attempting to renew my domain and it says it’s unavailable. I know that no one has taken the domain. I believe this may be some sort of glitch with WordPress because I did not renew my domain the day it expired. What can I do to get my domain back. Again, I know that no one has taken the domain it’s simply shows up as unavailable.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Kristophersheehy.

Could you please provide me with a name of the domain that expired? I will do some checks for you. Please note that a domain, after it expires, is subject to a grace period. In case of a registrar called GoDaddy, for example, they hold your domain name for approximately 42 days before canceling it. Domain name renewal during this period is usually subject to applicable renewal and redemption fees.

I’m looking forward to your reply.

    Best wishes,

    Marcin

@kristophersheehy, the Whois database shows that your domain is registered with http://www.wildwestdomains.com. Their 24/7 contact number is (480) 624-2500. However, they appear to be resellers of domains for other registrars, so I’m not sure if they will be able to help you out, but you may try to give them a ring. I would also recommend to try the following (copied from other post):

    1. Locate your WordPress.com login credentials.

    2. Login to WordPress.com, and go to your Dashboard. (NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS YOUR WEBSITE’S WORDPRESS DASHBOARD!)

    You can try: yoursitename.wordpress.com/wp-admin.

    3. GO TO “SETTINGS” > “DOMAINS”

(URL should look like this https://yoursitename.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=domains

    4. From there you have two options…

    (A) Click Renew by the domain that you purchased.
    (B) Scroll down to “Domain Administration” and follow the instructions (Set a new password. Copy the Customer Number located under the password set box. Click on the link “Manage Your Domains”

    5. If you chose option A above. You should be set.
If you chose option B above, continue @ #6.

    6. Log-in to the Automattic Domain Management Panel using the Customer Number you copied in step 4B above, and the password you created.

    7. Select the domain you wish to manage.

    8. Under Domain Information, you should see several items, one of which is “Locked: __________.” If it’s set to LOCKED, click the blue “Manage” link and unlock it. If it says Unlocked, continue to #8.

    8. Again under Domain Information, now look for the item that says “Authorization Code” – there is a blue “Send by Email” link. Click it, and it will email you the EPP code (to the email address that is associated with the Administrator of the domain registration).

    9. Once you have the EPP code, you can contact your desired registrar, and give them the code to complete the transfer.

This 9 point step-by-step advice will allow you to transfer your domain away from http://www.wildwestdomains.com/ to another registrar of your choice.

Please let me know if you found this response useful.

    Best wishes,

    Marcin

According to your account’s logs, you cancelled the domain on 17 August, at which point it was removed from your account.

I should still be able to get the domain back by emailing our registrar, but as it’s been more than 18 days since the domain expired there is an additional $80 fee to recover the domain. If you are willing to pay that fee, please let me know and I’ll send you an email with further instructions.

    @keybald

It’s not possible to transfer domain that has been either cancelled or that has expired, so the instructions you give here won’t work. Additionally, the link you provide under step 3 does not exist for WordPress.com sites, nor are any of the further instructions that you give in the least accurate or applicable to WordPress.com.

Something that helped me out a lot when I just got started in the forums here was to create a WordPress.com test site where I can try stuff out for myself when troubleshooting issues. I suggest you also try something like that so you can be sure the advice you give is valid and works on WordPress.com
