Domain unavailable after cancellation
-
Hi, I know that there is probably a simple solution to this but I’m a complete newbie…
I accidently purchased a custom domain on wordpress.com rather than wordpress.org. However I realised my mistake and cancelled the payment and swiftly got a refund.
I now however am unable to set up my blog on any other domain hosting site including wordpress.org as the domain name is unavailable, yet I obviously can’t access it.
Is there anything I can do to get it back? Will it ever become available again? I am desperate for it.
Thanks so much for any help.

Hello!
WordPress specifies that when a custom domain name is canceled there is no guarantee of getting it back.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/cancel-domain/However, it appears that the domain names canceled within 48 hours are held by the registrar (in this case WordPress.COM) for what appears to be 5 days.
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/getting-my-custom-domain-name-back-after-cancellation?replies=10WordPress(according to the thread above) may be able to rescue the domain name. What you could do is have the domain name registered with WordPress.COM and have it point to a different hosting company (Bluehost or GoDaddy) that runs the WordPress.ORG software.
–>What was the custom domain name in question that you canceled?

Thank you for your response,
So if I wait 5 days my custom domain ‘becomingesme.com’ will be available again?
Is that correct?
If wordpress rescues the domain name, will I have to wait 60 days before it is able to be hosted on an independent hosting platform?

I went ahead and tagged it for a staff follow-up. Based on an older thread it appears they have done that in the past.
It also appears that the domain is already registered (probably by you at with WordPress.COM as the domain registrar).

Thank you, really appreciate it.
hah ye that would be me. If its registered on wordpress.com, i presume ill only be able to transfer it to another domain hosting after the 60 days?
Sorry for being a complete cretin with this

No problem. Staff would better able to provide you with a correct answer to your question. Please be patient as staff works in the order of requests received.

Hi there,
As pcosta88 mentioned, when you cancel a newly registered domain the domain is usually released within about 5 days for you to register again elsewhere, but there’s no guarantee. It’s possible the domain won’t become available for you to register again elsewhere. (That’s why we don’t recommend canceling domains unless you’re sure you don’t want to use them at all anymore.)
If you’d like, we can try to recover that domain for you, and you can then move the domain to a new host. For the first 60 days you’ll need to keep the domain registered here, but you can still point it to your new host to use it there. After the waiting period you’ll then be able to transfer the domain completely to a new registrar if you’d like.
Please let me know if you’d like to go ahead and try to recover that domain here. :)
