domain/ upgrading
-
Hi,
I am in the process of starting my own swimsuit line and need to set up my website. I have already purchased my domain through go daddy but have not hosted it yet. Since I have no experience in web design I was planning to use wordpress or wix.
I was hoping you can help clear up a little confusion on my end. Will the personal plan work for me or do I need to do premium?
Also, if I do the premium plan will I be able to add a payment processing widget when I’m ready to sell? And do the premium plans include hosting? or do I need to pay separately to have it hosted? One more question, when you link the domain with the premium plan is my website is wordpress included in the name of the domain?
Thanks for your help and clarification!
Best,
VeronicaThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi veekaswimwear,
I’m not sure if the Personal plan is enough to allow you to use your own domain name. It says on this support page that a Premium or Business plan is needed, but the pricing page says that the Personal plan includes a custom domain name. I have the same question, and I’m waiting for a reply on this other forum post.
I’m also not sure about the payment widget. However, I think I can help with your other questions!
As for hosting, all blogs (even the free ones) are hosted by WordPress.com. So, you don’t have to worry about getting hosting separately.
If you see people hosting their own WordPress site, they may be using just WordPress.org – the free technology that makes WordPress websites work. WordPress.com is basically WordPress.org blog technology, plus hosting, and tools for managing and customising your own blog. Finally, when you link (or ‘map’) your custom domain to your blog through the Premium (or maybe the Personal) plan, wordpress will NOT become part of the name.
Domain names like veekaswimwear.wordpress.com are just free subdomains of WordPress’s domain: wordpress.com. When you bring your own domain, you’ll be able to use it without using the wordpress.com domain at all. -
Hi again!
I experimented a bit and learned about domain mapping. Despite what it says on the support page, you don’t actually need a Premium or Business plan to use your own domain name!
If you have the free plan, you can pay a fee each year (I think 13 USD) to add your own domain to your blog. You can do this through the ‘Domains’ section of your blog’s control panel.
If you have the Personal plan, then it looks like the upgrade is free! I think the Personal plan comes with a single free domain credit which can be used to map our own domain like this without charge (at least for the first year – I don’t know what happens after a year)

None of our plans offer a shopping cart option, so if that’s something you need we are not the right platform for your site. However, you can always look at the self-hosted version of WordPress where you can install a plugin like WooCommerce that will give you that functionality.
You can find more information on getting your own hosting here:
As for the domain, all our plans include one free domain registration or domain mapping, as indicated here:
https://wordpress.com/pricing/
You will also be required to purchase a plan to be able to register a domain, so I’m afraid the advice @anniessewingstudio gave you is not completely accurate. Once you have a plan you can add as many additional domains or domain mappings as you want, but the first domain has to be added as part of a plan.
