Domain verification

I need to know why Google search console keeps saying verification failed. I took the code in console and entered it in verify domain in marketing and traffic. I have tried to enter a new code 3 times but Google search console keeps saying verification failed. When I verified Bing the same way Bing verified my website immediately. Do I have to wait a week for WordPress DNS server to confirm my website with Google search console?

The site I need help with is softwaregallore.wordpress.com.

  • Hi there,

What verification option from Google are you using? As you have a free site, the only option that will work is the HTML-tag option:

    https://wordpress.com/support/webmaster-tools/#google-search-console

Make sure that after you copy the tag from Google, you don’t close the browser tab where you got that. Leave that tab open, and open your WordPress.com site in a completely new browser tab. Paste in the HTML tag on our end and save, then give it around five minutes before clicking the Verify button in the Google Search Console tab.

If you close or navigate away from the Search Console tab after copying the code, that effectively cancels the verification process on Google’s end, and even if you click the Back button in your browser to go back to the page, it won’t accept the code then.

I have done as you instructed but it keeps failing. When I add a property, must I add my full address from software to wordpress.com or must I only add WordPress.com? And under instructions for: must I choose any DNS provider or a provider from the list? Then which provider? Like I said I verified with Bing within a minute. But I with Google search console I am battling for days. I don’t know if Bing is recognising my website because I’m using a free website or not. I am using the meta tag. I copy the tag then go into my dashboard and enter….I save then go back into Google search console and wait then press verify but still it fails. 5 Min or 10min it still fails. That’s why I’m wondering if Google is recognising the sub-domain or not. Because there is 2 options. Verify domain or URL prefix. The URL prefix I download a html file but don’t know where to upload it. I try removing the property and add it again to get a new code and try again but still after 10min it still fails. On forums they say it can take upto 3 days. But does that mean I must stay connected to the internet and stay on that verification page on Google search console for 3 days? What else can I do?

    Hi there!

When I add a property, must I add my full address from software to wordpress.com or must I only add WordPress.com?

You must enter the full WordPress.com address of your site. Also, it’s important that you follow the steps exactly as shown here from the very first step of adding a property. If you choose the wrong property type, it will not work.

And under instructions for: must I choose any DNS provider or a provider from the list?

You don’t have a domain registered on your site so the DNS provider option will not work. You will need the HTML tag option to verify your site with Google Search Console.

Because there is 2 options. Verify domain or URL prefix. The URL prefix I download a html file but don’t know where to upload it. I try removing the property and add it again to get a new code and try again but still after 10min it still fails.

On a free WordPress.com site, only the HTML tag method will work. So you’ll need to create a “URL prefix” property type and verify using the HTML tag.

On forums they say it can take upto 3 days. But does that mean I must stay connected to the internet and stay on that verification page on Google search console for 3 days?

Not really. Even if it takes some time, you definitely do not need to stay on that page. However, you need to click the verify button on Google Search Console repeatedly (after waiting a while) if the verification fails. If you navigate away from that page, you may have to go back to click the verify button.

I’d suggest restarting the whole step (starting at adding a new property) and following everything as shown on this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/webmaster-tools/#google-search-console

Let me know if you need further help.
