Domain vs Plan
-
I want to register a domain for my existing blog. I was wondering about the difference between buying a premium plan and just getting the domain.
First, the domain is $24 per year (though on some of your pages it says $18 per year), and a premium plan is either $8.25 per month or $10.75. All of these prices show up on your sites when I try to search them, and it’s confusing because I don’t why one web page is saying one price and another is saying a different one. Which is it?
Second, is the difference between a domain and a premium plan that I won’t get any upgrade in storage space and customization upgrades if I just buy the domain (for $24 or $18)? And so, is it possible that after having purchased a domain I can buy a plan in order to upgrade storage and customization down the line?
Lastly, on some of your support pages (https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/07/01/space-upgrade/) it says I can buy just a storage upgrade of 10GB, without any other upgrades included in the premium plan, for $20/year. Yet, when I try to find a way to actually purchase this, I’m directed to the premium plan page, which costs $129/year. I’m very confused. If this option doesn’t exist any more please update your support pages, and prices throughout all pages.
Thank you for the help.

Hi onceuponatimeinvancouver,
We just recently implemented a change to how domains are purchased and so I can understand your confusion. It is confusing!
I want to register a domain for my existing blog. I was wondering about the difference between buying a premium plan and just getting the domain.
As of about a week ago domains can no longer be registered as a separate upgrade. You’ll need to purchase one of our plans and a domain is included with this.
Second, is the difference between a domain and a premium plan that I won’t get any upgrade in storage space and customization upgrades if I just buy the domain (for $24 or $18)?
Premium does come with extra space; you’ll get 13GB instead of just 3GB. But there are also lots of other cool things like no ads, custom design, and the ability to upload audio and video. Previously if you registered just the domain advertising would appear on your site. That doesn’t happen with the Premium plan.
And so, is it possible that after having purchased a domain I can buy a plan in order to upgrade storage and customization down the line?
Unfortunately, no. You’ll have to buy a plan from the outset because domains can only be registered with a plan now.
Lastly, on some of your support pages (https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/07/01/space-upgrade/) it says I can buy just a storage upgrade of 10GB, without any other upgrades included in the premium plan, for $20/year.
We no longer sell space upgrades separately. You would need to get a plan instead.
I hope this clears things up a bit! Let me know if you have any other questions.
