Domain.Website Confusion
-
Hi,
I recently tried to edit my account information and accidentally messed up my website/domain? Im not really sure, but I can’t access my website because it’s said it’s deleted, but I still have my domain on namecheap. I don’t really know what it meant when I was asked to map my domain, so I just did and changed some info on my account. Im terribly confused.

Hi there!
To clear up any further confusion, there is WordPress.com and WordPress.org, and they are two different entities.
We, WordPress.com, are a cloud-based platform where we manage WordPress sites, whereas WordPress.org is stand-alone software that you can download and self-host with any other hosting.
You can find more details about WordPress.com and WordPress.org on this support page:
https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
Now, what is the address of the site youre referring to?
If you were able to change your domain and lost access to the site afterward, it may mean you’re actually talking about a self-hosted WordPress.org site, in which case, we won’t be able to help here.
If you are talking about a WordPress.com site, please let us know more details of what you’re trying to achieve so we can advise. -
Hi,
Thank you for your reply. It’s wordpress.com. So I was trying to disconnect my domain (namecheap) with my current blog in WordPress, but somehow, I messed it all up…first, I was asked by wordpress when I logged in if I wanted to map my domain, which I answered yes because I thought it was mapped out already and then I changed some account infos from laramindy to lmv992 (bec I wanted to use laramindy for laramindy.com). Next thing I new, my website doesnt exist anymore. What I wanted was really to just redo my domain/website and connect it to another wordpress account.
Sincerely,
Lara -
Okay, so it looks like you have changed the address of the site laramindy.wordpress.com to lmv992.wordpress.com. When you do that, the old address becomes unavailable, that’s why you see that the site does not exist when you get there.
To map your custom domain, laramindy.com, to that site (or another) you will need to purchase one of our paid plans and then follow the steps outlined here:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/
It’s not possible to purchase a standalone mapping subscription.
Does that makes sense?

If I don’t map my domain anytime soon, will I still be able to use and map it in the future?

Yes, you can map your domain at any point. Just remember, that you’ll be paying for the hosting plan that includes that option. I might wait to upgrade the account until you’re ready to map the domain.
As for the second questions: If the domain is pointed to WordPress.com it is still registered at the current registrar. The registrar is where you control who the domain points to. So, at any point, you can update those details to move to a different hosting provider.
