Domain – Wix

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I am new and I have few questions:

    1. I have my own website and domain in WIX.
I have created my free wordpress page just today.
I am trying to transfer the domain only to WordPress.
Can you please tell me the steps (worpress side) I should follow or a link where the steps are explained?

    2. Can I transfer the domain if I only have a free account with WordPress? Or do I need to upgrade my account if I want to have my own domain?

    3. fyi I want to transfer the contents manually. Do you have any recommendation? Like deleting any web content on the WIX side?

    Thanks!!
    Marc

  • Hi there,

It is not possible to transfer a domain to WordPress.com, so you will need to leave the domain registered with Wix, or transfer it to another registrar, and then map it to your WordPress.com site. You will need to buy the Premium or Business plan in order to map a domain here.
Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

The only way to import content to WordPress.com is as an XML file. I don’t think Wix provides such a file, so if by “manually” you meant you want to copy-paste everything over here, that is what you’ll need to do, unless you can export your Wix site to another platform that will let you export an XML file.
    Import

As for deleting your content on Wix, you’ll need to contact their support. We don’t have access to your Wix account and have no way to help you delete your content over there.

    Hi Kokkieh,
Thank you very much for your reply!

You provided the link “Use a Domain you already Own”. This page says “Ask your domain provider to update your DNS settings”. It is my understanding that this is useful for Wix too, right? I mean, Wix is considered as my domain provider, right? Or you only reffer to providers like GoDaddy?
I just want to make sure before asking Wix something they can not provide :)

Yes, by “manually” I mean copy/paste.

I may did not explained well on my last point (3). Regarding my comment on deleting the content on my website, I am specially concerned in having the new content in WordPress (with new domain) and still having the content in Wix (with subdomain).
Is it important me to delete all content from Wix? Would that affect the SEO or Google considering that I duplicated a website?

    Thanks again for your help!
    Marc

Correct. If your domain is registered with Wix, they are your domain provider, so you need to change the name servers with them.

Some domain providers don’t offer the ability to change the name servers, though. I don’t know if this is the case with Wix, but if they say they require IP addresses instead, let me know and I can provide those to you.

Thanks for clarifying. Can you set the Wix site to private? That will prevent search engines from finding the same content on more than one site.

The other option is to set your site here to private until you have moved all your content over. Then you can delete the Wix site and set the site here to private so that search engines can start indexing the content here.

    Sorry Kokkieh, last 2 questions….:

1.- As you said, I can not transfer the domain to WP but I can map it.
Let´s say that I map the domain I purchased in Wix to WordPress.
fyi I purchased the domain for 1 year.
I do not want to loose the domain after 1 year but, at same time, I do not want to keep my account with WIX. So what should I do?
Is it possible to “buy” the domain from WP later? (I said “buy” because it is my understanding that we have free domain when upgrading with WP).

    2. I have an account with GoDaddy.
    What would be your recommendation?
Map the domain from WIX to WP? or transfer to Godaddy (and then maping from GoDaddy to WP)?
(I guess I can follow same instructions you sent me above for both options, correct?).

    Thanks,
    Marc
PS. I will let you know if WIX requires an IP instead.

  • Is it possible to “buy” the domain from WP later? (I said “buy” because it is my understanding that we have free domain when upgrading with WP).

If you let the domain expire with Wix it should eventually be released and you’ll be able to buy it at any registrar that have rights to the particular domain, e.g. .com, .org, etc.

I say “should” and “eventually” as domain expiration is a process that takes anything between 70 and 90 days, depending on the registrar, and the domain could be sold at auction by the registrar in which case it’s never released.

If you want to keep using a domain, the safest option is to not ever let it expire for as long as you want to use it.

    2. I have an account with GoDaddy.
    What would be your recommendation?
Map the domain from WIX to WP? or transfer to Godaddy (and then maping from GoDaddy to WP)?

I can’t really make a recommendation, as I don’t have direct experience with either of those companies. Here I’d suggest you do your research and look at online reviews to determine which one will give you the best service at the best price.

You will be able to map your domain from either of them. As long as your domain provider allows you to change either name servers or A-records (which the vast majority does) you can map it to a WordPress.com site.
