  I am thinking of changing my domain to a different name, so I will lose .wordpress.com.

  I see WordPress can do that for you, which costs a fairly low amount of money.
  But, if I decide to go to a different webhosting, is it possible to take my domainname with me, or is it ‘owned’ by WordPress, and can it only be used by WordPress on a WordPress site?

  You can register a custom domain. This would then replace your WordPress.com subdomain:

  example.wordpress.com

  If in the future, you decide not to use WordPress.com, you can transfer your domain to a different domain registrar or adjust the name servers to point to your new web host.
