Hi @sppdfederation ,
can I connect the domain without it affecting the other site until the WordPress site is ready to be published
Absolutely! You’re welcome to create your new site with us before connecting the domain here. That way your current site can stay “live” until your new one is ready. We have tools to help you import content and whatnot too. Let us know what you need and we can help you get that going.
Also, I do recommend getting a plan before the site goes live if you’ll need its features. I noticed in your other thread you were asking about a membership site, for example. The Personal plan gives you the Premium Content Block, for example, which may work better for you than simple password protection. You’ll need a plan either way to connect the domain, so I’d recommend that option, but if you’re not sure we’d be happy to advise. The Personal plan would also give you direct, private support.
If you use this to buy the plan, just “skip” the domain options until you’re ready, and then you can connect or transfer the domain when the site is done.
Let us know how else we can help!

Just to make sure I understand correctly, if I do not want to affect the other site, I need to wait to connect our domain until my WordPress site is ready to be published?

That is correct. We recommend saving the domain as your last step, just before you are ready to “launch” the new site to replace the current one. That way you can get all set up here on this end at the private “wordpress.com” address that was assigned when you created your site, and no one is wiser.
When you feel all ready on this end, then you will want to connect your domain, which will allow you to remove the “wordpress.com” portion of your domain and connect your existing custom domain instead. This will seamlessly move everyone to the new site, and the old site will no longer be possible to visit.
As mentioned above, to connect your custom domain will require an upgrade (it’s not an option on free sites) which has the added advantage of turning off the advertising we show on free sites to help cover our costs, and providing a private email support option.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
