Domains and downloading themes?

    I have my website listed and domain registered with wordpress, though it wasn’t until I wanted to change my theme to something different that I realized I couldn’t, without downloading.
    I really don’t understand the difference between the two different platforms of wordpress, one installed and one logged in and online. I have the online, log in version, and when I’ve gone to install the other version, it confuses me. I’ve already paid for my domain, though apparently I need to pay for another one on another site, like GoDaddy? All I want to do is download a theme and maybe a few pluggins. Can I not do that on my online version of wordpress? Can anyone help?
