  What exactly is a domain? And if I take any of the plans offered by WordPress, it says that it offers a free domain. Does a free domain mean that my web address will not have wordpress.com in it?

  A domain name refers to the named address, All of WordPress.com Plans come with a custom domain, for example, you can have a domain name as “thegenresoflife.com.”

  Yes, free domain means your address will not have wordpress.com in it. You can refer to this Support Article to check the different WordPress.com Plans.
