Domains and traffic question….
-
OK – so I did read the long sections of posts and replies re: domain mapping. Now, here are my questions.
1. I work at a school and most blog sites are blocked, even for staff, 24/7….that being said I can currently open a blog that has wordpress.com in the address but I am not holding my breath for this to continue. If I buy my own domain is it less likely to be blocked or does it all depend on the intelligence of their security software. My blog will be very G rated and I just want my co-workers to be able to check things periodically. :)
2. At wordpress.org and through my own server would I own my own domain? Does it come automatically with the web space? I have 10 mg of unused space and am still debating the issue. In other words could I have the domain I want with wordpress.org – the same domain I would buy with wordpress.com?
Here is something I read on one of the other topics but I was unsure as to whether or not it answered any of my questions:
Some people have reported a custom domain getting more search engine referrals than a wordpress.com subdomain, but honestly I think they should be about the same.

Hi extras,
1. You own domain is less likely to be blocked, but not much, because the tools all do both domain name and IP based lookup.
2. WordPress.org? Domain registration whether purchased here or elsewhere, you own the domain. A domain can only direct to one host either wordpress.com or your own server.
The quote from Matt does not relate.
I hope that helps,

One thing I’ve noticed is that even though I have a hosted domain name (beatsentropy.com), if I go to login to do admin stuff/write new posts I always end up back at the *.wordpress.com domain.
So if wordpress.com is blocked, then you still won’t be able to blog even if you own a domain — unless you go with self-hosted.
