Domains from different sights

It’s more a personal preference type of thing, really.
Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/
A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/
So, basically, are you an “all of your eggs in one basket” type of person, or “not all of your eggs in one basket”? :)

@bradywelch if you want the custom domain to be primary, yes you will need a paid plan. We have more info here:

I currently have the domain registered until 2023. If I transfer it to WP (instead of map), is the understanding that the registration will then be extended to 2024? And I can use a free WP theme? And the cost will be $18/year?

If you transfer the domain to us, we will add another year to the domain’s registration.
Using a custom domain still requires a paid plan, which includes 1 free domain registration, transfer, or mapping.
