Domains & Hosting

Hi, I’m looking to set up my blog and I’m just unclear on a few things.

    1. If I get my domain and pay for monthly hosting from another supplier, do I need to also get a monthly WordPress plan (Personal / Premium /Business)?

    2. If I get my domain and hosting from another supplier, will it ‘remove wordpress.com ads’ as the WordPress plans do?

Thanks so much for your guidance!

    Hi there,

Purchasing hosting from another supplier and using it to host your WordPress site is known as self-hosting.

If you choose to self-host then you will be building your site using the freely available WordPress.org software. Your site would not show WordPress.com ads and and you will not need to get a monthly plan.

The downside of self-hosting is that you will also need to manage backups, security and maintenance of your site yourself. It is therefore considered a route recommended for more experienced users.

If you pay for any of the WordPress.com plans, you will receive a domain credit that you can use to set a custom domain for your WordPress.com site. Purchasing a plan will also remove WordPress.com ads.

Here is a link to more information about the differences between building on WordPress.com and building on your own hosting using WordPress.org software:

Please let me know if you require any further information.
