Dont show the whole article…

Dear all helpers,
I would like to ask how to publish an article BUT I don’t want the whole article to appear. I would like to show the title of the article and then I would like the whole article to appear by cliking to a link under title saying ‘more’ or ‘read more’. I don’t make this up my mind. I have seen it to other websites.I tried to enable it by going to preferences as an admin and then Read pages. There is an option there that sais for every article show: whole article or summury. i choose summury but nothing changes.

When you’re writing the post, there’s a button in the editor that says “more” or something similar.
When you get to the point where you want to split the post int othe “more” are, press this button and it will insert the appropriate code.
Then you will find when you publish the post that it will appear just as you specify above.

WHAT?? I never knew this. Do we have to press it again like with the link thing so as to close the link code? And where does it go? Does it open a new window or go to another page or just drop from the bottom and then show?

No, you don’t have to press it twice. It just inserts a single line of code. It will essentially open the whole post in the same window as if the reader was going to view the comments.
Personally I don’t like it, don’t use it myself and don’t tend to click unless the “story” is *really really* interesting. Just my preference though.

Might help with all the pictures I post. lol But will it screw up the feed that people register for?

No nosysnoop it works fine through the feed. You can prove this to yourself by subscribing to your own feed so you know what other subscribers are getting at their end. I did this through my bloglines account.

The only real issue though is that you’re using the pictures to hook your readers in. If they don’t see them right off, they might move on.
What I would do in your case is display a single picture above the more tag, a text line saying something like “Click on read more to see the rest of the pictures.”, and place the additional pictures after the more tag.

I might do that when I post again over 10-20 images in a single post. lol I even get annoyed when I have to keep on scrolling down my own page. :)

In that case, you might want to break a single post into 2 or 3 with links between them. (ie “To see more, click this link” with a link to another post.)

I just converted my whole site to this method and introduced a new additional hook picture above the more line in each post. I like it a lot better than a really long scroll.

There’s just one thing to aware of and that’s that when rss readers hit the <!–more–> tag they come to a dead halt.
I think that bug has been fixed. I monitor my feed with Google Reader, Bloglines and Firefox/Sage and I haven’t had any problems with (more) not showing up for a while.
(Either that or the bug is theme dependent and I switched to a theme that doesn’t have the bug)

I am going to try this for some of my posts, some of which are very long. I had tried the summary option first and when it didn’t happen I thought well, its the Andreas theme which doesn’t allow it. Thanks for bringing it up.

Someone said there’s a problem for those with feeds? Can anyone reassure me on this aspect?

I do not know what you mean by “the summary option”. The only summary option I know of pertains *only* to rss feeds (see italics below).
-> Dashboard -> Options -> Reading
Here on the Reading Options page if you scroll down you find:
Blog Pages
Show at most: —postsSyndication Feeds
Show the most recent: —posts
For each article, show:Full text
SummaryNote: If you use the <–more–> feature, it will cut off posts in RSS feeds.
Unless you have the same theme as engtech (click his username and see) and experience the same thing then what’s written there stands.

So does anyone know which themes (apart from Hemmingway) allow you the option of only displaying the excerpts on home page and/or archive pages? I will be eternally grateful if someone can help me so that I don’t have to try them all.
