Don't understand how to add a menu item in header

Another morning of massive frustration and wasted hours. I have read @timethief’s recommended links to custom menus as well as the Support pages and am still totally lost.
I want to add an “About” tab up in the header of my main page so that when someone clicks on it, it takes them to my About page. I followed the instructions and went to Appearance > Menus. There I see a box that displays Pages; under that it says “no items”. Below that is Links, Categories (where I typed in a category) and Format.
To the right of that there is a box for Menu Name where I entered the word “About”. I then clicked on “Save Menu”. Nothing happened.
Then, under Menu Structure, it says “Drag each item into the order you prefer. Click an item to reveal additional configuration options.” What is the definition of an “item”? And where would I drag this mysterious “item” to?
Lastly, under Menu Settings I checked “Primary Menu” although I’m not sure why.
I haven’t the foggiest idea what I’m doing, or what to do next. Any help greatly appreciated.

You could have a browser related issue. Please try these and report back your results.
If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com please do these four things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache:

2. Make sure that you have third-party cookies enabled: http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
3. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
4. Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
If it’s still happening, let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

I really don’t think this is browser related. I simply don’t understand the instructions.

a) If it says “no items” in the Pages module, then you haven’t created the About page, or you have created it but it’s a draft or private. A page won’t be available in the module if it isn’t published and public.
b) If you only want a “Home” link and an “About” link in the header (or, in general, links to your static pages only), you don’t need to mess with custom menus: the regular menu of the theme automatically displays links to all your static pages (again, if they are published and public). So simply go to Appearance > Menus, click Theme Locations, set the pulldown to “–Select a Menu–” (so that no custom menu is selected) and click Save Changes. -
