I picked a blog because I didn’t know what I was doing and really want a normal website not a blog. How can I start over?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I just began working in wp two weeks ago, have learned a tiny fraction of what I need, but I will offer my “I feel your pain” perspective. I hope it helps.

The key term here is “static front page.” Forgot about the idea of wp as a blog site. On a technical level, it’s all about placing coded objects in certain places on a page and linking those objects to other objects on other pages. In the pages tab, I think, you should find an option to create a static front page.

FIRST AND FOREMOST – build a sitemap now, before you do anything else. Even if it is just scribbled out on a piece of paper. I did mine in visio, but you can use google docs or any other diagramming software (flow charts work fine) to map out how you want your organize your site. This will save you so much time and confusion over the next several days. I also recommend that you surf the web looking at other sites to help you define a set of personal “best practices” for your site.

There is a lot out there on the web about building sites in wp. AFTER you build your sitemap, I recommend that you open wp and start playing with themes and adding/removing/changing themes, widgets, and menus to see how it works, all the while referring to the tips and explanations you find on other sites to help you understand anything that confuses you.

    Good luck.

PS – a Blog IS a web site

Most people think of “web site” as a static boring thing – just make a few static pages as noted above – but put interesting stuff in a Post – sort by Category – It looks like you are a home owner assn. put the meeting minutes and news items in Posts – then the homeowners can subscribe to your site and be notified with you have put new important something on the site (maybe a change in parking or garbage service)

PS. The forums are great too. Start there with your questions, because the answers you receive from some of these gurus are spot on and include links, etc. BUT, don’t sit back and wait for an answer to your problem, because it may not come anytime soon. Post your question, then go look for answers elsewhere or move on to another issue until you get an answer.
