Don't want complete text of previous posts showing…help!!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

    I’m struggling!

I am desperately trying to change my blog layout so that on my front page, instead of having each post displayed in its entirety, one would just see a summary of each post. I personally don’t find it very appealing or user friendly to have to scroll through loads of text before being able to see what the previous post was.

In an ideal world I really like it when previous posts are displayed in ‘boxes’ or separate areas on the page – but this might only be available via an upgrade (I just have a basic blog at the moment).

I have tried going to Settings>Reading>Summary but this doesn’t seem to change anything on my page??? What am I doing wrong – or is there a different way?

Any help would be gratefully received!!

Also as an aside – i’ve heard lots of good things about the wordpress calendar which you can use to organise/schedule your posts?? I’m also struggling to find that!

Many thanks for anyone who takes the time to respond to me – very much appreciated!!

    Jess

    Hi there,

The setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts.

If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.

Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. Here are the themes that do provide that feature > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410

You are a star! Thank you very much!

Rather than changing my theme (which I may do at some stage but can’t quite face doing it yet!) I was able to retrospectively insert ‘the more tag’ into my posts.

Brilliant and has made it look more appealing for people scrolling down I think!

Thank again for taking time to reply to me….very kind,

    Jess
