it seems your header image is smaller than the required minimum size. Another problem is your theme; it’s outdated and is no longer supported.

I would advice to go for a recent theme that’s more flexibele.

    Thanks for your reply.

I have used images that are in the configuration editing section. Same situation. With my own image, I have gone through the cropping procedure.

I have tried a newer theme, but it does not use the previous configuration editor, and with the new one, I just got totally lost. I am so glad that the classic text editor still works.

Hi there, So looking in the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, the header for Mystique should be

Header image is 940 in width and 200 in height.

which your header image is. But if I use the Inspector in Firefox and Brave, the Header is 940 x 232.6 pixels. Give that a try and see if that changes anything.

One thing to keep in mind here, retired themes are generally only updated for security issues.

  • Unknown's avatar

That makes sense to an 80-year-old brain. I photoshopped the original to 940 x 232.6 pixels and uploaded it. Alas, when I wanted to install it in the customise setup and use “add new image” it wants to crop the image to 940 x 200. Is there a way to bypass this?

  • Unknown's avatar

If you navigate to Appearance>Header (not Appearance>Customizer>Header), does it not give you the option to skip cropping?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it does. When I go to appearance>header, it still takes me to the cropping section. Even the suggested header images (without cropping) show the same overlap. If I remove the header image, the words in the header by themselves (site title and tagline), are displayed as they should. Also, when I crop the image smaller than the window, the overlap occurs.

Strange, even when going in through WP Admin> Appearance>Header, sometimes the “Skip Cropping” button appears and sometimes not. You might need to experiment with this a few times as I’m not sure what triggers the appearance of that button. It took me a few tries when I tested this last time.

    Hi @wolfganko,

Is there a page on your site where this isn’t an issue?

Looking at the code, the reason why you see a second image below the first one is because the background image is set to repeat, this means the image is to repeat itself in order to fill up the header’s empty space.

Are you able to access the CSS for this page? If you could remove/add a few lines of CSS code, I can help you get it to look more the like image below.

  • Unknown's avatar

AFAIK, the option to set a repeat of an image doesn’t apply to the header image, but only a background image.

But that does help hit upon a solution if we can’t work this out. Using a repeating pattern rather than a photograph.

Or, if you don’t have your heart set on continuing with Mystique, change to a different, newer theme, such as one of the currently available Classic Themes or Hybrid Themes

Sorry, after two hours, no success.

I also tried to customise new themes from the links you suggested. When I selected preview and customise, I ended up in a different kind of customiser (Site editor) (not the one that opens from the dashboard), which (almost) drove me mad – the side editor. OOO all these changes in which I don’t see any benefits.

Some themes don’t offer a preview but want me to activate this new theme. I don’t want to do that before I know if a theme works for me. Is there a reverse option? I assume, they still would push me into the site editor.

I searched the customiser ( from the dashboard) for a possibility to change the theme from there, hoping to test a theme the way I know … which I have done previously with no problems. Did I overlook this?

The reason I like to change to mystique (which I use for one of my not so successful sites) is that it makes the full page width available. But, if it is all too difficult, I go back to writing, that’s what I like doing.

If you have any more suggestions, I will still try. Thanks for your help.

By the way, the site with all the information, (in which the header image works) is https://sapientwords.wordpress.com/

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there a way to roll back to the site’s previous settings?

  • Unknown's avatar

Classic themes that also have a full-width page template can be found at

    https://wordpress.com/themes/all/free/filter/classic-theme+full-width-template

If you activate a different theme, even to test it, you won’t be able to revert to a retired theme. https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/retired-themes/ Sapientwords is also using a retired theme. So you might want to preview on a new test site and not your actual websites.

AFAIK none of the Classic themes open in the Site Editor as they are not Block themes.

I’m going to be away from my computer for the rest of the week so will only be able to check in then.

Did you have a pleasant break?

I have been writing. I often wonder, where it all comes from.

In between, I checked some of the themes selection from your link. They all open in the new customising thing, one with blocks. Yes, my old themes open in the old customiser panel, which I like and am comfortable with.

Would I need to activate a “new” Classic theme to be able to customise it?

Of course, I can also skip the header image, as a last resort.

  • Unknown's avatar

They all open in the new customising thing, one with blocks.

I tested this on my demo site and the only choice presented to me was to activate the theme. There’s no option to “Preview and Customize” like there used to be. Which means if you want to test a new theme without affecting your currently active sites, you’d need to register a new site (click the blue button at the top right on your My Sites page) and activate the theme you want to test there. You might also want to export some of your current content and import it to the test site. https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-a-sites-content/

Customizing can only be done after activating a theme and after activating a new theme on my test site, I was given the option to Customize this theme, which opened the Customizer https://wordpress.com/support/customizer/ and not the Site Editor https://wordpress.com/support/site-editor/

I think I’ve exhausted what I would suggest. if you have other questions after deciding what is best for you, consider opening a new forum thread. Cheers.
