double spaced lines in poetry

Why do my poems – cut from Word and pasted into my blog – always end up double-spaced? It’s ugly and doesn’t happen with prose. When I post to another WordPress hosted e-zine, they are not double-spaced. They didn’t start out this way two years ago but have been posting this way for a long time. I know no HTML. Help. Poems shouldn’t be so ugly.

It’s the cut and paste from Word. When you do Enter at the end of a line in poetry, the WordPress software interprets that as a double space.

The solution is: don’t paste from Word. You can still write in Word, but instead of copy/pasting directly into your blog, try copying into Notepad or Wordpad, then copy THAT. This should strip out the code that makes it double-space.

Note that formatting poetry in WP.com is a bit of a pain. I always recommend A) formatting in the blog itself and B) lowering your expectations. There are some limitations about spacing that unless you know code are pretty much impossible to get around.
