Downgrade to free version

    Good afternoon

My site expired and I have paid for a 1 month extension (now expires on 2nd May), I am wondering whether it is possible to downgrade to a free , wordpress.com/intotheterraces domain so that I do not lose all the articles I have written up until now?

    Many thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The site intotheterraces.co.uk appears to be hosted on GoDaddy, and not hosted on our WordPress.com service. It is my understanding that GoDaddy does not have a free site option, so to do that you will need to export the contents you have on intotheterraces.co.uk and import them into a new (empty) site that you create here under your WordPress.com account.

To do that, you can follow our guide here for migrating your site over to us as a free site: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-an-entire-wordpress-site

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Good morning

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Apologies, the technical part of the site is beyond me! I use bluehost for the hosting, so I suppose that my wordpress account is purely for the website building functionality.

I have the domain name for a year but the basic bluehost package just for another month- I extended it purely so I wouldn’t lose the work that I have done so far. I will follow those steps to import the site now. Am I correct in saying that, even though I have the domain for a year, the content of the website will disappear at the end of this month? If so I will make sure I switch it to the free version now!

    Many thanks again

  • Hi there,

I use bluehost for the hosting, so I suppose that my wordpress account is purely for the website building functionality.

If I can clarify a bit, WordPress is the name of the software your site is built with. You’re hosting that software with Bluehost. That software is free, but you’re paying Bluehost for use of their servers to host the software online.

The forum you’re posting to now is for WordPress.com, another hosting provider, like Bluehost. Your site isn’t hosted with us, but it is connected to your account via the Jetpack plugin you have installed on your site. That allows you to manage the site using our tools, but we don’t control your site itself.

Am I correct in saying that, even though I have the domain for a year, the content of the website will disappear at the end of this month? If so I will make sure I switch it to the free version now!

That depends on your host, but in most cases that’s what will happen, yes – Bluehost is providing you a service to host your WordPress installation on the web, and once you stop paying them, they stop providing that service. The domain is just a human-readable address for your site, and is something separate from your hosting and site itself, so the domain can continue to exist even if the hosting expires.

On WordPress.com the hosting service itself we provide is free, and instead we charge for optional extra features and services we provide. So you can migrate your content to us, and host it here on our free plan if you prefer. Note that you’ll need to create a new WordPress.com site in your account first, before you can move your content here:

    https://wordpress.com/start/site/

Also keep in mind that with our free plan you’ll only be able to use the free example.wordpress.com domain we’ll provide to you. To use your existing intotheterraces.co.uk domain, you’ll need our Pro plan.
