Downgraded back to free site, Google refuses to recognize website in its current form

  • Unknown's avatar

I upgraded to the business plan for a couple of months and it wasn’t really what I wanted so I downgraded back to the free account. My website will not load up for Google even though I have waited long enough for the site information to show up in the Google results, I keep getting the message that my plan has expired even though I am still able to get friends to access the website when I put links to individual pages on my Facebook groups, I was hoping somebody at WordPress would get in communication with Google and fix this problem please

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi, can you clarify what you mean about it not loading for Google?

Are you using Google’s webmaster tools?
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/

If you haven’t set that up yet, that could give you some insight.

When I first upgraded to business class I tried installing plug-ins oh, I was informed by the website that I would have to alter my website address to something with WP staging in the title, when I downgraded the website the problem I ran into is that if somebody taps the original website address from before the upgrade instead of going to the original address it keeps going back to WP staging address and then I get a message about how the site has expired, it doesn’t matter where the person Taps the link, through Google or Reddit or whatever, it keeps going back to WP staging instead of the old address and I just want to know how to switch it back

  • Ok, we can bring the site back to its original state, but it may result in the loss of any content created with plugins while under the Business Plan.

Would you like us to proceed?

Alternatively, the Business Plan does come with a free domain registrar, so the site would only be at that staging address until you launch it, in which case it would be under your custom domain.

If you’d like to stick with that, you can purchase a new Business Plan under https://wordpress.com/plans

I can’t afford to pay $30 every month for a business plan, especially one that was frankly not worth it for what I was trying to accomplish so I guess I have no choice but to risk losing all of my data, I wish I had never tried the business plan in the first place, you have no idea how much pain and difficulty took me to edit that blog, I have a severe pain disorder and the only reason I was able to accomplish so much was because of a temporary side effect from some medication but if that’s what needs to be done so people can access my site properly then let it be so

  • @zwahk if I understand you properly, you had a site on a wpcomstaging address, and when that was downgraded to a .wordpress.com address, wpcomstaging links that were in Google search results stopped working.

And those links would stop working because the .wpcomstaging.com address no longer exists.

There’s not a great way around that right now, but I would recommend adding Webmaster Tools to your site so Google start fixing their links. You might also ask them to take the old links down, but it’s up to you.

    Does that help?

The original website was (ArcaneDelightnet. WordPress.com), when I installed the business plan plug-ins it said I had to change the address to the wp staging address, currently it’s not just a problem with Google, I also tried putting the link to my old website listed at the beginning of this post into reddit and it didn’t work there either

  • Currently we don’t have a way to redirect the old .wpcomstaging.com address to the new .wordpress.com address.

The way around that problem would be to of had a custom domain under the Business Plan (this is included free with any paid plan). The custom domain appears instead of .wpcomstaging.com or .wordpress.com so it would remain consistent even if you left the Business Plan.

At the moment, the only recommendation we have is to change the links where you can change them and wait for Google to pick up on the change.

To speed Google along, I recommend re-verifying your site in their search console: https://wordpress.com/support/site-verification-services/#google-search-console

I don’t understand what you mean by change the links

  • Hi there,

There’s no need to change any links. Just re-verify your site with Google and soon Google’s search crawlers will pick up the changes and update their listings.

There’s nothing else that can be done now. You’ll have to just wait for Google Search to update your site in their database.

My original website address isn’t working on Reddit, Facebook or Google, if it gets fixed in Google will it start showing up on those other websites as well?

  • If you’ve shared links with your old address in those platforms, then you’ll need to go there and change them to your current one.

I don’t have the new address anymore because I downgraded from the business plan back to the free plan, on my WordPress app portal it features my old address now and I am able to access my website through there but when I try to access my website through any other sites like Facebook, Pinterest, Google Etc I get redirected to the WPstaging address that I had while I had the business plan upgrade, at the beginning of this thread I was told that someone could manually go in and change it back to my old address so that I wouldn’t keep getting redirected to the wp staging address but that it would risk me losing some of the stuff saved on my blog, I have decided I’m willing to take the risk and I would really like somebody to go in and manually change my website address through WordPress so that people will stop being redirected to the wp staging page that doesn’t work anymore since I downgraded back to the free plan, please

  • I think staff-blorbo misunderstood your issue at the time. There’s no need to revert your site; this was already done when your Business plan expired.

As @fstat explained above, any links you shared while your site was using the .wpcomstaging.com address will need to be updated manually, as that address will not automatically redirect to the .wordpress.com one.

So, if you shared a link to your site on Facebook, you will need to edit that Facebook post and replace the link with the current address. There’s no way around this, I’m afraid.

My website link started working again last night but now I have two separate post of a lot of my articles and I can’t figure out how to delete a blog post if I am using my phone instead of a computer, many of the instructions on finding online seem to be aimed at people who are using a mouse instead of a phone oh, I just want to know how to delete unwanted blog posts when you are using a phone to do your editing

  • Hi there,

You can easily delete a post using your phone by clicking on the three dots to the right of the post and selecting Trash. Here’s a screenshot to make things easier:

Over a year ago a friend put a stock photo from a website outside of WordPress on to my website so that it appears at the top of every page, I would like to replace it with another picture but I can’t find directions for how to do this if I’m editing it with my phone instead of a computer

You would need to log into your WordPress.com account via a browser in order to access the Customizer tools (which are not in the app). It sounds like your theme has a header image that you want to change, so once you’re logged into the Customizer, you can follow the steps here to update that:

    https://wordpress.com/support/customizer/#header-images

Since you’re getting off track from what you posted about originally, if you need further assistance, please start a new support thread here:

    Thanks!
